Designed for the Room: How Sonance is Evolving to Meet Design-Forward Spaces

If you've been in home audio for the past two decades, you know the Sonance story. We pioneered architectural audio by engineering speakers that disappear into the architecture, “Designed to Disappear.” That philosophy served us well and set the standard for invisible audio. But today, let’s talk about what happens when a designer intentionally says: 'I want this speaker to be visible. I want it to be part of the room's design story.'

That's the journey we're on now. And it's changing how we think about what audio can be.

The Evolution: From Invisible to Intentional

For years, Sonance's mantra has been simple: let the room speak, not the speaker. Our in-ceiling and in-wall solutions are engineered to integrate seamlessly into architectural elements. Disappearing behind drywall, blending with ceiling treatments, and becoming part of the built environment rather than competing with it. This approach has defined who we are, and honestly, it's still a core part of our DNA.

But we started noticing something on high-end residential projects and in conversations with architects and interior designers: sometimes, the most sophisticated design move isn't to hide the technology; it's to integrate intentionally. When a designer specifies a room with premium materials, curated finishes, and every detail considered, they're not trying to hide technology. They're asking for technology that respects the design language they've created.

That realization led us to develop a new philosophy: Designed for the Room.

Why "Designed for the Room" Matters for Your Customers

Think about the conversations you're having with your clients. The affluent homeowners, the design-forward families, the clients who've worked with top-tier architects and interior designers. Many of them are asking the same question: 'Why should I accept a black speaker or a white speaker box that doesn't match my design? I've specified everything else in this room. Why should audio be any different?'

On-wall speakers have always been visible, there's no hiding that. But they've rarely been designed with intention. They've been an afterthought, something to apologize for. Sonance is changing that.

When you present a Sonance audio solution under the "Designed for the Room" philosophy, you're positioning audio not as a compromise in the design, but as a design element itself. You're telling your customers that we understand their space and that we've engineered our products to complement the materials, to match their finishes, to align with the scale of their displays, and to perform at the level their lifestyle demands.

Introducing the Natural Collection

Everything we've learned about design-forward audio solutions comes together in the James by Sonance Natural Collection, our newest line of on-wall speakers.

These aren't just speakers wrapped in attractive finishes. Every Natural Collection speaker is handcrafted in Minden, Nevada, from premium materials. We've engineered these products around five designer-selected wood finishes, each chosen not for breadth, but for relevance, the finishes architects and interior designers are specifying today.

The Materials

Modern Brown and Modern Teak feature genuine real wood veneer, offering an authentic natural finish that responds to light and environment the way only real wood can. These aren't laminates or veneers designed to hide; they're premium materials chosen to deliver genuine character.

For cleaner, more minimalist palettes, Modern White, Black, and Sand Gold offer painted wood finishes with consistent, refined surfaces. Each finish maps directly to the way contemporary architects are building rooms. Whether they're specifying warm woods, cool whites, dramatic blacks, or transitional neutrals.

Standard or Display-Matched Sizing

Here's another way we're thinking differently: we're offering flexible speaker footprints in standard, minimal dimension, or matching speaker dimensions to the displays your customers are already specifying. The Natural Collection is available in sizes that align precisely with 55", 65", 75", and 85" Samsung Frame TV displays, the go-to choice for design-forward installations.

Horizontal Thin-Line (HTL) models create a seamless soundbar solution below the screen, while Vertical Thin-Line (VTL) models can flank artwork or TV display with a clean vertical presence that feels native to the wall. The result? A cohesive visual story where the audio system and the display feel like they were designed together, because they were.

For installations where display-matched sizing isn't the priority, both models are available in minimal dimensions: 19.75" for the NC3 and 23.25" for the NC5QT. Every speaker is just 2" deep, perfected for low-profile installations next to hanging artwork or sleek modern displays.

Premium Performance at Two Levels

The Natural Collection is offered in two performance levels:

  • The NC3 features a 3.5" shallow-depth thin-line waveguide driver paired with an aluminum tweeter purpose-built for refined, low-profile applications. It's the sophisticated choice for medium-sized rooms.
  • The NC5QT steps up to a 5.25" shallow-depth driver paired with the James Quadratech tweeter, delivering expanded performance for larger spaces and installations where audio presence matches the visual presence.

Both models are anchored by the NC10-SUB, a 10" subwoofer available in all five Natural Collection finishes. This allows you to complete the system with visual cohesion. The subwoofer can be wall-mounted, placed on a pedestal, or positioned under furniture to fit the spatial needs of the project.

Design Flexibility: Your Customers' Fabric, Our Frame

We're offering grille options across nine premium woven fabric colors to complement any room palette. For even more design-forward projects: the Designer Grille Frame lets your clients add their own fabric and match the room exactly. If they've spec'd a specific upholstery or textile, they can now make the speaker's grille part of that visual language.

Why This Matters for You as a Dealer

The Natural Collection is an opportunity to expand your addressable market.

For years, your options for on-wall audio in design-forward spaces were limited. You either worked with generic speakers that didn't match the design, or you had to venture into unfamiliar product categories that didn't offer the audio quality or dealer support you're used to.

With a Sonance badge, five thoughtfully selected handcrafted finishes, flexible speaker sizing, and real performance credentials, you now have a conversation starter for those high-end projects that previously felt out of reach.

You're also addressing a real pain point in modern integrations. Your clients are buying premium displays and premium finishes. They want audio to be an equal partner in that design conversation, not an afterthought. The Natural Collection gives you the answer.

A New Chapter in Architectural Audio

For two decades, Sonance has been the pioneer of audio that disappears into architecture. We're proud of that legacy. But the definition of "architectural audio" is evolving. Today, it's not just about in-wall and in-ceiling solutions; it's about audio that understands the room it's in.

The Natural Collection represents Sonance's answer to what design-forward audio looks like when it stops hiding and starts belonging.

If you're ready to take on projects where audio design matters, where materials matter, and where your clients expect every detail to be intentional, the Natural Collection is your platform.

Invisible audio will always have its place, keeping the room the hero. But the future of architectural audio isn't defined by what you can't see. It's defined by what you can feel: intention.
